Local Buy is Queensland’s principal local government procurement partner and the largest provider of legislatively compliant pre-qualified supplier Arrangements in Queensland. We aim to make it easy, efficient and effective for local governments to connect with their local suppliers. We provide access to over 4,000 pre-qualified suppliers through more than 50 Arrangements.
Local and State Governments strive to support local businesses, but procurement is costly, takes time, needs to manage fraud and corruption risks, and must also comply with Queensland Audit Office standards.
Local Buy helps councils and other approved purchasers meet legislative, reputation and compliance needs, simplifying the process by connecting organisations with pre-qualified local Queensland suppliers, big and small. This saves time and money and reduces an organisation's need to tender, advertise and prepare contracts.
Councils were asking for help with procurement, which is why the Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ) created Local Buy in 2001. Access to Local Buy is a valuable component of LGAQ membership. The profits from Local Buy are returned each year to the LGAQ and invested to help keep council membership fees low.
Local Buy’s strict pre-qualified supplier process effectively means that organisations can access a range of goods and services through a quotation rather than a tender process whilst still complying with Local Government Regulations.
Local Buy Arrangements open every three months to new or existing suppliers looking to expand their Categories. Opening Arrangements each quarter is a unique process and we take pride in being the first to implement this innovative process in Australia - we even won an award for it!

Supporting Small Businesses
- 27% of all suppliers on Local Buy are small Queensland owned, social enterprises or Indigenous businesses.
- Our administration fee exemptions benefit over 1,100 Queensland-owned small businesses.
- These businesses are exempt from the annual administration fee, and as a result, Local Buy now has almost as many small Queensland-owned businesses as the total number of suppliers we had back in 2019.
Beyond Queensland
Local Buy partners with the Local Government Association of Tasmania and the Local Government Association of the Northern Territory to include the requirements of Tasmanian and Northern Territory councils when approaching the market to set up new contracts.
